Annie was born on February 28, 1954 and resided in Sharyland for most of her youth. Learning the value of education at a young age, Annie graduated from Sharyland High School in 1973 and received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Pan American University shortly thereafter. She has used her education and abilities to give back by helping others through her work as a teacher and counselor at PSJA ISD High School for 35 years. Annie found the joy of seeing her students succeed and worked tirelessly to provide them with opportunities for improvement, both professional and personal. There wasn’t a question she couldn’t answer or a problem she couldn’t solve – she has climbed many mountains for her students, family and friends to ensure their success. She was a source of inspiration and inspiration to all who knew her.
Even though Annie was a hard worker, she was first and foremost a mother. She raised her children knowing that family comes first, that education is the key to success, and faith in God is the ultimate source of strength. Her tireless efforts have not gone in vain to her children Joel A. Garza graduate of the University of Texas at Austin employed as college professor and founder of the All Star Theater at McAllen, Jennifer R. Garza-Balderas graduate of the The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio worked as an occupational therapist and Dr. Ginger R. Garza, a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, worked as a pharmacist. Annie raised her family in the home of her dreams, which she meticulously designed and built in Edinburgh. Most recently, Annie got a new title as “Gamma” for Ariel and Avery, a new source of her shared love. Annie’s three children and grandchildren were the sweethearts of her life and she was their greatest supporter, advocate and best friend.
Annie was a lifelong lover – she was the party planner, the hostess with the most fun and fun of every vacation reunion. There wasn’t a dance she would be sitting at, a theatrical production she would miss, a football or basketball game too far away to attend (especially the Cowboys, Longhorns and Spurs). His favorite pastime was to go to the beaches of Hawaii, the casinos of Las Vegas or the shops of New York. There was no roller coaster off the list at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios – she did it all, in style.
Her children are left to cherish her memory and carry her legacy; Joel A. Garza, Jennifer (Omar) Garza-Balderas and Ginger Garza and their grandchildren Ariel and Avery Balderas of McAllen; her beloved mother Juanita Martinez from Sharyland, and her siblings Armando (Esperanza) Pena, San Juanita (Eddie) Hernandez, Juan Martinez and Norma Lopez from Mission and her sister-in-law Cindy Pena from McAllen. She also leaves her faithful companions Ricky (Yorkie) and Ben (parrot) and many nephews, nieces, friends and neighbors who were dear to her. Annie is predeceased in death by her father Tino Pena, her father-in-law Santos Martinez, her dear brother René Pena and her brother-in-law Robert Lopez, and the precious mentor Dora V. Garcia.
The family would like to thank Dr Malcom, Dr & Mrs Enslein, Dr London, Dr Seas, Dr & Mrs Solis, Dr Kaplan, Dr Martinez, Nurses Marysol, Jackie, Judd, Bjorn, Daniel, Rose and the medical staff of the MD Anderson Cancer Center for their hard work and vigorous care.
